Artificial intelligence tools, self-representation in court, and the future of access to justice

On 21 January 2026, the National Centre for State Courts (NCSC) will host a webinar on the use of AI in court. Many self-represented litigants rely on artificial intelligence tools, often general-purpose chatbots. Courts and legal aid organisations face important questions about whether and how to help self-represented litigants use AI tools constructively. This month's webinar from the TRI/NCSC AI Policy Consortium for Law & Courts brings together leaders from public courts, legal services, and access to justice initiatives to explore this challenge.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

Distinguish between artificial intelligence tools provided by courts and publicly available artificial intelligence tools.

Assess the security measures and policies that courts and legal aid organisations should implement when developing or approving artificial intelligence tools.

Learn to apply new best practices and policy frameworks for using artificial intelligence to improve access to justice in their jurisdictions or organisations.
